5 Common Face Mask Mistakes to Avoid

Face sheet masks are very popular because they are easy to apply and affordable. It requires only 10-20 mins of your time. However, if you use them incorrectly, they can do more harm than good to your skin. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid.

1. Leaving masks on longer than 20 minutes

Longer is not better. There is a reason why the instructions on the package of the most face masks recommend between 10 and 20 minutes. Leaving the mask on longer can actually strip moisture away from your face and end up dehydrating your skin. Want to make the most of the product, here’s a tip:  if there is some serum remaining in the packaging, apply it to your neck, hands and heels.

2. Keeping masks in the fridge

Many people store the masks in the refrigerator and believe a cold mask helps minimize pores. However, cold masks can irritate your skin and also cold temperature may limit the efficacy of in some ingredients. The most ideal temperature for storing masks is about 15 degrees Celsius.

You have to keep hydrogel masks in the fridge since they can melt and dissolve with heat.

3. Using masks too frequently

One mask per day is not necessarily good. There are so many different types of face masks and each focuses on different issues. If you use a mask for anti-aging, firmness, whitening or other treatment too frequently, it can irritate your skin and cause breakouts. A mask per day works only when you have very dry skin and you use a hydration mask. For other masks, twice or three times per week is recommended.

4. Combining heat with the face mask treatment

Some believe using a mask when pores are open enhances the effectiveness of mask and they use a mask  in the bath or in a sauna. However, a mask sheet on your face keeps sweat and dirt in and can clog your pores. If you want, use it after you finish your bath or sauna. Do not forget to wash your face before you apply a mask.

5. Switching face mask products too frequently

There are many types of masks that focus on different skin concerns. Some concentrate on anti-aging, some on brightening and some on hydration. Using one of each each time seems like a good idea since you get to cover all your skin concerns. However, your skin has a 4-week turnover term and it is most effective to use one type of the mask 2~3 times a week for 4 weeks.
